You’re invited to the Centenary Celebrations of the Bell Memorial Public Hall, on Saturday 20 May 2017.
The programme commences at 9.00am and features a one-act play by the Bell Theatre Group, Centenary Avenue tree planting, followed by a luncheon.
The first newspaper mention of the Maida Hill School of Arts is from May 1890, and by 1915-16 this building was not in use. On the 7th September 1916 a public meeting was held in Bell and new trustees were nominated for the Maida Hill School of Arts (without these appointments the State Government’s Lands Department was unable to advise their opinion concerning the removal of the building to the Bell Hall Reserve in Wallace Street, Bell).
The Bell School of Arts was officially opened on the 3rd of June 1917. The large crowd at the opening was entertained with a concert programme followed by dancing.
It was said at the time that “The building is a decided acquisition to the township”.
